Good morning! Have you ever watched a talent show on television where dance groups compete against other acts? When the team is out of sync with the music or each other, it can be a train wreck; but the more a team is in sync, the better the performance will be! I can’t even believe how good some of those groups are – the practice and dedication is so admirable!
Last night, Josh and I were preparing for a song we will be doing with my niece during our Good Friday service at church. My niece will sing, Josh will play the saxophone, and I will play the keys. This is the first time Josh and I are attempting to play a musical piece together and it is so much fun! He is impressing me like crazy with the way he can read music and listen for the correct timing.
It is important for us to listen to each other play and either speed up, stay at the same tempo, or slow down to match each other. Additionally, we are trying to enhance each other’s sound by not being too loud or too soft. Once we are comfortable playing the music together, we then need to get my niece involved to sing along with us to ensure the tempo, volume, and key are right for her voice.
By the time Good Friday comes rolling around, all of the attributes and parts of the song will be just right, and it will be a beautiful sound of worship to our Savior King!
This reminds me of our relationship with God and how we need to be in sync with Him to be able to produce a beautiful “sound” to the people around us!
It amazes me how I can play one instrument, Josh can play another, and even though we are playing different notes or parts, they come together perfectly. The more I learn about music theory (and I haven’t learned much LOL), the more I am amazed at how everything fits together perfectly according to the time signature, tempo, and key.
When a life is in tune with God, that person will inspire others, bring peace to those around them, and carry the presence of God everywhere they go. People always see what is produced outwardly, but very few realize what it takes to get there. In order to be a person that lives in step with God, it takes sacrifice, consistency, and surrender.
Similar to playing a song together with my son and niece, when our desire is to walk in sync with God, there will be moments when we need to speed up, slow down, keep the tempo, play louder, play softer, and so much more. The only way we will succeed in letting our life song sound beautiful to the world around us is to listen for God’s voice and take our cues from Him!
“My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.”
John 10:27
Many people want the product of a life surrendered to God, but aren’t willing to put in the work. Watching Josh work so hard to play the song the best he can is such a proud moment for me! He is committed, dedicated, and willing to practice daily so that we can offer God our very best – that is what He is worthy of!
Prayerfully, this work ethic and desire to give God his best, will continue to spill over into every area of his life. The question for us this morning is, “Are we willing to put in the hard work?” It’s going to take daily commitment, intentional listening, and a sacrifice of our time and energy to live for Jesus in a way that others will see our authenticity.
Let’s choose today to be diligent in learning His voice so that we can know when He speaks and follow where He leads. It will not look exactly the same for each person because we are all different and have a unique, personal relationship with God. But the outcome WILL be the same, a life that will BE TRANSFORMED daily – making a positive, eternal impact on the people around us!
“Heavenly Father, thank You for creating music! It is so beautiful and reaches to our soul! This morning You are using it to teach us how to walk in step with You. We may all be a different instrument, but when we listen for Your lead and follow You, our lives will play a tune that will attract people to You! Help us to not play selfishly, but to be in perfect harmony with You to influence the people around us! In Jesus Name – AMEN!
