Good morning! Have you ever wanted something so bad that you couldn’t stop thinking about it no matter what? Everything you did revolved around how you were going to make it happen to finally get your hands on that one thing!

When I was younger, it was Adidas Copa Mundial soccer cleats or a Houston Oilers pullover Starter jacket. As I got older, it was a car or a house. It doesn’t always have to be big things though, the same thing happens to me when I want to purchase a pair of AirPods, a pair of sneakers, a new Bible, seriously anything that has any value to me.

I develop such a one track mind that it is often hard for me to focus on anything else until I have made the purchase or have decided to not go through with it.

It’s amazing though how when I make the purchase, that one thing that I have been obsessing over for the last day, week, month, or longer has now become just a regular part of my life. After I have it in my possession, I appreciate it and use it, but it is no longer something I think about excessively.

Most of the time, I use the things frequently after first receiving them and then little by little they become less used and sometimes less important. The truth is, all of these things are replaceable and we can live without them.

There is one thing though that should be sought after above ALL other things, something that is irreplaceable, and the only thing that can permanently satisfy – a relationship with God!

“As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, my God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go and meet with God?”

Psalm 42:1-2

Water represents life – the deer has a deep longing for water because that is the source of its life. The human body can only survive for approximately three days without water. We rely on water to bring life to our physical body, but only God can bring life to us spiritually.

Think about how often you spend time reading God’s Word. Is it daily, every other day, once a week, once a month, or not that often at all? Imagine what would happen to our physical bodies if we only drank water, once a week, once a month, or not that often at all. We would not survive and we would certainly not grow! The same is true in our relationship with God – if we do not spend time with Him on a consistent basis, we will not grow but instead we will be spiritually dead.

There was a woman who had an interaction with Jesus when she went to a well to collect water. Jesus offers her living water and she is so confused. He doesn’t have a bucket and the well was deep – where was He going to get this living water He was telling her about?

“Jesus answered, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”

John 4:13-14

In this passage of scripture, Jesus is talking about the limitations of the Law which could not provide a permanent solution for our spiritual need. Only the water that Jesus brings could bring eternal life. This water symbolizes the Holy Spirit which He promised to send after He ascended into Heaven. The person who receives the Living Water will be satisfied eternally.

The Living Water is the only thing that can satisfy. God is the source of this Living Water and His resources are unlimited! This well never runs dry!

And the last part of the verses above talk about this spring of water welling up – this is the constant renewal of life produced by the Holy Spirit in all of those who yield to Him! I think about a fountain of water that is continually running compared to a stagnant swamp where all types of bacteria can breed.

If we are paying attention to the yearning of our soul and spend time with God, our lives will constantly be renewed. On the other hand, if we are not going to the source of life, our lives will be a breeding ground for all things that do not align with God’s Word.

Spend time with Jesus today! Read your Bible, listen to worship music, spend time in prayer – feed your soul with the only One that can satisfy – Jesus!

Heavenly Father, thank You for promising to satisfy our every desire! As we come to know You more, our hearts begin to align with Your’s and we long for the things that You desire. Help us to find our purpose in You alone. Help us to constantly draw from Your Living Water to be renewed each day! Help us to not attempt to do life on our own, but with You! In Jesus Name – AMEN!
