Good morning! A couple of years ago, we bought timers to automatically operate our lawn sprinklers. Since we don’t have in-ground sprinklers, we had to set up a few hoses with different types of sprinklers and place them strategically for the best coverage.
Automating the process was one of the best decisions we made—it really simplified things. Every morning, we hear the water running through the pipes and I jokingly tell my wife, “You’re welcome,” because technically, I’m watering the lawn! 😄
Eventually, some of our timers started acting up, so we replaced them. Everything worked great again the only thing that stinks is having to move the hoses and sprinklers every time we mow the lawn.
One morning, while sitting in the living room, I heard a strange noise. I went to investigate and discovered that one sprinkler was watering the house instead of the lawn! We had forgotten to put it back after mowing. The very next day, I looked out and saw the other sprinkler watering the driveway but this time it wasn’t our fault; the sprinkler was broken.
In a similar way, sometimes things go wrong in life because we made a mistake, like forgetting to reset something that was working. Other times, things break or go sideways for reasons outside of our control. Either way, we have to be paying attention.
We can’t assume that just because we set things up a certain way, they’ll keep working indefinitely. That’s true for our lawns – and it’s especially true for our spiritual lives. Being a Christian isn’t just about setting it and forgetting it. It’s not enough to claim faith once and expect everything to stay aligned forever.
We need to regularly examine our hearts—our beliefs, our responsibilities, our actions, and our attitudes. Life can shift us out of alignment without us even realizing it. Maybe our behaviors need to change. Maybe our treatment of others has been slipping because of stress, pain, or disappointment. Maybe we’re slowly drifting from God’s truth without noticing.
That’s why time in God’s Word is essential. It helps us recalibrate—revealing where we’ve gone off track and guiding us back to where we need to be.
“Examine yourselves to see whether you are in the faith; test yourselves. Do you not realize that Christ Jesus is in you—unless, of course, you fail the test?”
2 Corinthians 13:5
Heavenly Father, thank You for the gentle reminder this morning to pay attention. It’s important for us to constantly monitor our behaviors and ensure they align with Your truth! Help us to ask You for clarity on things that are out of alignment and to follow the leading of the Holy Spirit to keep us on track. In Jesus Name – AMEN!
