Good morning! When I first moved into my office at work, there are a couple things that I brought in to make it my own. I spend so much time there that I figured I wanted to bring things in that would remind me why I’m there.
Here are a few of the things:
- A little wood square made by Josh that says, ‘#1 Dad’
- Index card with Psalm 1:1-2 written on it
- My grandma’s wooden metronome
- A (now empty) Saltwater taffy candy box from NJ
- A plant
They each encourage me in different ways and provide purpose in times when I sit there wondering how I am making a difference for Jesus!
- The wood square from Josh reminds me that I am there to provide for my family
- The index card with Psalm 1:1-2 reminds me to stay true to God in every decision I make, not to be swayed to follow the ways of man
- My grandma’s metronome is just a special piece that I wanted to display that reminds me of God’s timing in all things
- The Saltwater taffy candy box was a gift from my coworker but reminds me of my homeland and my family
- Then there is the plant which reminds me to continue to do what’s necessary to grow
I want to focus on the plant and the Bible verse this morning – those are the only two living things out of the objects mentioned above.
“Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers, but whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on his law day and night.”
Psalm 1:1-2
This verse reminds me to do what is right at all times. In every conversation, in every disagreement, in every discussion, and in every decision. To follow God regardless of how popular it will be among the people around me. It reminds me to continue thinking about God’s Word and applying it to every situation.
The plant reminds me to keep growing. I check my plant everyday. I want to make sure it’s getting the right amount of sun, the right amount of water, and that it continues to show signs of life. This is similar to our own lives. We need to make sure we are getting the right amount of SON (Jesus) to support our spirits, the right amount of water (to support our physical bodies), and that we are showing signs of growth.
When I am away from the office for more than a weekend, sometimes the leaves will begin to turn up. This is a sign of environmental stress on the plant – water loss or the wrong temperature. The good thing is that if I get it what it needs, it is not lost but will bounce back.
That should give us some encouragement this morning that when we are lacking what we need spiritually, we have the chance to get ourselves in a position to get more SON or water to show signs of life. We have to be paying attention to what is coming out of our lives to be able to know when we are lacking something.
When I brought my plant into work, it was contained within the pot. Now it has two vines coming off that are about three feet long. When people come into the office, it is always a topic of conversation. The same thing will happen when our lives are growing and showing signs of spiritual life!
Heavenly Father, thank You for the reminder this morning that if we are paying attention, we have opportunities each day to ensure we are growing! Help us to be paying attention to the way we behave, to honor You at all times! In Jesus Name – AMEN!
